I have mixed feelings on this one. I think elementary, junior high, and high school are important. You learn the basics. But college is a different story.
I think it depends on what it is you’re trying to get into. With the right schooling you learn and gain new connections. There are a lot of benefits. But, I don’t think we need to know half the shit we are required to take along with our major classes.
I guess for a lot of musicians, education isn’t that big a thing. All the schooling in the world isn’t gonna make you a great performer. It’s a fantastic resource, though. But if you got it, you got it. Some of the best musicians in the world didn’t have an education. Just throwin’ that out there.
Gen Eds are bull shit. Why the hell do I need to know math or science to be a musician? Huh? I’m a music major with a minor in history. That’s all I want to learn. Don’t make me take 3 terms of a foreign language. I don’t want to learn about leadership, ethics, and values. All I want to do is play my drums, sing, and compose music….and learn some interesting history facts along the way.
So I guess I just don’t like all the extra things they make you learn about in college. I feel it should be optional. Just sayin’.
